SSL BUS COMP CLASSIC
SOLID STATE LOGIC BUS COMP CLASSIC - DYNAMICS PROCESSOR
Different eras of SSL. One Classic Bus Compressor.
Few studio devices achieve true iconic status. Even fewer are so strongly associated with the sound of the final mix. Solid State Logic The Bus Compressor is one of them. For over five decades, its unique sound has made it one of the most well-known and distinctive dynamics processors in professional audio.
Only SSL could have recreated it with such precision. Referring to the essence of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor, the Bus Comp Classic returns in a dedicated 1U format, faithfully reproducing the sound and optimized workflow of the original while expanding its capabilities with the Variable VCA Drive feature, a wider range of Ratio and Time settings, and an authentic external sidechain input in stereo mode.

High-Performance THAT 2181 VCA Circuits
At the heart of the Bus Comp Classic compressor are high-performance THAT 2181 VCA chips in the audio path, combined with SSL’s unique sidechain architecture, which utilizes a VCA in the feedback loop. Together, they create a unique character that has made the SSL Bus Compressor an indispensable piece of studio equipment, combining power, dynamics, and consistency with exceptional musical character. From subtle compression to aggressive bus processing—crisp transients are kept in check, while multiple elements begin to move and breathe in harmony.
Designed without compromise, the Bus Comp Classic offers a faithful recreation of the character and feel of the SSL Bus Compressor, with the precision, consistency, and reliability expected of modern SSL analog equipment.
Variable VCA Drive
The new variable VCA Drive feature expands the capabilities of the Bus Comp Classic. It allows you to achieve a variety of sonic characteristics, bringing together decades of the distinctive SSL console sound under a single, smoothly adjustable knob. At the cleanest VCA Drive setting, the VCAs operate in a balanced configuration, delivering a clean, low-distortion sound and the powerful transient response characteristic of SSL’s SuperAnalogue™ generation—from the 9000 series to today’s Oracle and Odyssey consoles. As soon as the control is engaged, the VCAs operate in an asymmetric configuration, introducing harmonics and the character of classic SSL designs, such as the FX384 and 4000 series consoles. Further increasing the control value gradually introduces additional coloration and saturation, transitioning from a subtle, console-like richness of tone to the denser, more aggressive character associated with early 4K series designs.
From polished mixes to heavily overdriven drums and parallel compression approaching 10% THD—the Variable VCA Drive feature lets you decide how transparent, saturated, or aggressive the compressor will be.

Classic controls. More music
The Bus Comp Classic retains the SSL Attack, Release, and Ratio settings—which have become the foundation of professional bus compression—in the form of precise, six-position step controls that ensure quick operation, accurate recall of settings, and repeatable results. Additional Ratio and Release settings expand the compressor’s creative capabilities, offering greater control and flexibility while maintaining the speed and directness of the classic SSL sound.
Each compression ratio has its own carefully defined behavior. The famous 2:1 mode features an exceptionally gentle „soft-knee” response, allowing for a gradual increase in gain reduction to achieve transparent processing of the mix bus. Higher ratios provide increasingly firm control and greater density, making them equally effective for tracks, drum buses, and parallel compression.
SSL Auto Release is more than just another release setting—it has its own unique character. Its program-dependent, two-stage release circuit dynamically responds to changing audio, releasing louder elements more quickly while allowing quieter elements to return to their initial level more gradually. The result is a natural, musical release character that preserves movement, detail, and control, making „Auto” mode particularly effective for complex material.
Designed for record production
From classic stereo mixing and bus compression to creative parallel processing chains—Bus Comp Classic easily adapts to the way you work.
Use it to blend the elements of your mix into a cohesive arrangement, shape the flow of the instrumental track, add dynamics to the drums, or give your mix the final polish that will make it sound complete. Its operational characteristics make it an instantly accessible tool for artists and producers, while delivering the precision and repeatability that audio engineers rely on during professional mixing.

Modern sidechain control
A precise, six-position sidechain high-pass filter provides greater control over the compressor's response to low-frequency signals. By limiting the impact of low-frequency elements on the detector circuit, the kick and bass can retain their depth and punch without causing excessive gain reduction in the rest of the mix.
True stereo external sidechain supports both creative processing and advanced export workflows. When exporting individual tracks, the master mix can feed the sidechain. This ensures that each track retains the compression characteristics it had in the full composition, which helps maintain the balance and dynamics of the mix across different versions and final outputs.
